I have known many people in my life that were blessed with a stunning talent... they were artists. An artist can be a person that can sketch cartoon creations, capture real life, paint, or other wise create masterpieces by ability and honing their gift. So, for their interest and desire in this craft I have designed this article to allow them to take the necessary steps in the hopes of making this hobby a career. A Career in Art: What you need to know... As I mentioned before there are many aspects in the career field of art. Sometimes it can be difficult for a person to know where they stand in the vast ocean of possibilities. So, to help you understand your talent a little better I have summarized the titles and what is expected of that artist. Graphic Arts: Many of the talented individuals in this field choose right off the bat to be a freelance artist or a company professional. The artists in this particular field get to use technology to create wonderful images for clients. The graphic arts career is booming and because we live in a techno-tool world there are always careers popping up for this art area. Just some of the work under this label include: graphic designers, illustrators, cartoonists, scientific/medical images, fashion, storyboards, etc. Fine Arts: Usually this depicts an area in art that covers many bases such as: painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, and the like. Generally a degree is achieved to break into this career but it is not always necessary. There are those individuals that break the mold and their portfolios reflect their ability prominently. A Career in Art: Job Options for Artists of All Levels Let's face it we all want to have our dream job right? Well, if you have a talent and a head for art then your need to explore the options available to you that can turn this God given gift into a full time career. The career choices below range from educated knowledge to raw aptitude. Find where you might fit in and research what career you could have. Art Educator: If you went to school, and have a degree in art, then you can get jobs teaching to eager students. High schools and universities pay well (over $30,000 annually) for teachers of this type so this could be a steady and worth while position. Studio Jobs: These careers often carry with it perks that make the work environment very desirable. Some of these perks include flexible hours and relaxed atmospheres. Fine arts are what are referred to as studio positions. As mentioned above this list is extensive and an artist has a broad range of capacity to fit into. Generally an artist make between $35,000 and $73,000 a year in these careers. Graphic Arts: As explained previously, the job market is always open for artists in the area. Many times deadlines are enforced making this career a more hectic one. But, on the other hand, there are so many interesting aspects that it makes up for the lack of ease in the work environment. Besides, if you choose to be a freelance artist in this field you can make your own hours and take on as many jobs as you want. The pay commonly falls between $30,000 and $40,000 annually. A Career in Art: Valuable Resources If you are looking for great schools to attend some of the most highly regarded are Academy of Art University (located in San Francisco), Academy of Reaslit Art (located in Ontario), Loyola Marymount University (located in Los Angeles) and Pennsylvania College of Art and Design (located in Lancaster) . These are just a few of the many different schools. If you are looking for organizations you should check into American Arts Alliance and American Craft Council for fine arts, American Association of Museums, and Museum Education Roundtable for art education, and American Society of Appraisers, and Art Dealers Association of America, Inc. for Art sales and appraisals. |
