About 'fashion design colleges'|O'More College Of Design Student Fashion Show








The               CW               Television               Network's               Gossip               Girl               (2007-present)               is               an               American               drama               series,               based               on               the               popular               teen               book               series               by               Cecily               von               Ziegesar.

The               show               follows               the               lives               of               a               group               of               young               adults               living               in               New               York               City's               most               privileged               area,               the               Upper               East               Side.

Private               school               students               of               prestigious               academic               institutions,               their               lives               mainly               highlight               on               scandalous               happenings.

An               unseen               narrator,               who               goes               by               the               name               Gossip               Girl,               chronicles               the               lives               of               these               particular               students               through               an               online               blog.

Hailed               as               a               teen-hit               success,               the               show               continues               to               attract               viewers               on               a               weekly               basis               because               of               its               perfectly               crafted               plot,               incorporating               two               key               topics               in               the               series:               social               class               and               sex.

The               two               topical               subject               matters               provide               viewers               a               glimpse               of               the               spectacle               that               revolves               around               the               lives               of               these               beautiful,               wealthy               young               people.

Prior               to               its               premiere               on               television,               Gossip               Girl               already               held               a               decent               fan               base               through               the               popular               book               series               and               the               show's               creator,               Josh               Schwartz,               who               is               highly               known               for               his               production               of               the               FOX               series               The               O.C.

(2003-2007).

Gossip               Girl               premiered               on               the               CW               network               on               September               17,               2008               at               the               8               pm               timeslot.

In               its               debut               season,               the               series               introduces               the               audience               to               the               extravagant,               yet               complex,               lives               of               private               school               students.

Together,               they               attend               prominent               private               academic               institution               in               the               Upper               East               Side.

However,               their               respective               social               status               ultimately               divides               them               and               their               place               in               school.

To               some               of               the               characters,               their               lifestyles               are               perfect               but               to               others,               working               hard               is               what               helps               them               attain               their               goals.
               The               show's               "moral               compass"               is               represented               through               a               middle-class               family,               the               Humphreys,               who               live               the               bohemian               lifestyle.

Young               adults,               Dan               (Penn               Badgley)               and               Jenny               (Taylor               Momsen)               reside               in               a               small               apartment,               in               the               borough               of               Brooklyn,               with               single               father,               Rufus               (Matthew               Settle),               a               former               rock               star               and               struggling               artist.

He               is               the               homemaker               of               the               family,               plays               a               prominent               role               in               the               children's               lives               after               their               mother               leaves               them.

Rufus               works               hard               to               pay               an               excessively               high               tuition               fee               because               he               wants               his               children               to               get               the               best               educational               opportunities.

Rufus's               role               as               the               homemaker               is               different               from               what               other               shows               usually               depict.

In               most               television               programs,               especially               in               the               past,               mothers               are               labeled               as               the               primary               homemakers;               at               times,               it               is               even               their               full-time               job.

Currently,               in               society,               families               are               unique               because               there               are               different               people               who               take               upon               the               role               as               the               homemaker               in               their               families.

Commonly,               it               is               the               woman               but               now,               both               or               sometimes               just               the               father,               who               puts               the               family               in               place.

Rufus               is               a               fine               example               of               that               change;               he               takes               full               responsibility               of               his               children               and               manages               to               juggle               his               job               as               well.
               Despite               living               a               less               privileged               lifestyle               than               their               fellow               schoolmates,               the               middle-class               family               appears               unfazed               by               it               and               maintains               a               relatively               close               connection.

However,               in               later               in               the               first               season,               Jenny               becomes               conscious               of               the               apparent               social               difference               between               her               and               her               schoolmates.

Striving               to               fit               in               with               Blair               Wardolf's               (Leighton               Meester)               clique               in               school,               she               schemes               and               manipulates               to               keep               her               spot               on               the               top               of               the               school's               social               hierarchy.

In               the               episode,               "The               Blair               Bitch               Project"               (4/21/08),               the               audience               notices               a               change               in               Jenny's               behavior               as               she               lies,               manipulates,               and               even               steals,               just               to               fit               in               and               impress               her               so-called               friends.

She               steals               her               friend's               red               Valentino               dress               to               wear               at               her               15th               birthday               party.

At               the               end               of               the               episode,               she               is               caught               for               her               immoral               action               but               quickly               bounces               back               by               bringing               the               best-looking               guy               at               school,               Nate               Archibald               (Chace               Crawford)               as               her               date               to               the               dinner.

Towards               the               end               of               the               first               season,               Jenny               becomes               rebellious               and               more               distant               with               her               father,               which               creates               tension               in               the               Humphrey               family.

However,               in               the               season               one's               finale               "Much               'I               Do'               About               Nothing"               (5/19/08),               Jenny               turns               her               act               around               and               becomes               fortunate               enough               to               score               an               internship               at               Eleanor               Waldorf's               fashion               company.
               The               Humphrey               family               is               unique               in               a               way               that               despite               certain               adversities               in               life,               they               turn               to               each               other               in               the               end.

Jenny,               who               struggled               with               her               social               status               in               season               one,               continued               to               rebel               against               her               father               in               season               two.

In               the               episode               "Bonfire               of               the               Vanity               (11/20/08),               Jenny               drops               out               of               school,               disobeys               her               father               and               moves               out               of               her               home               to               live               with               her               friend,               Agnes;               together,               the               two               young               teens               embark               on               a               fashion               design               career.

Despite               a               strain               in               the               Humphrey               household               during               the               ordeal,               Jenny               comes               to               her               senses               and               returns               home.
               Unlike               Jenny,               her               brother,               Dan               remains               true               to               himself.

Although,               he               eventually               becomes               tied               to               the               rich               kids               (dating               Serena,               befriending               Nate,               and               attending               lavish               cocktail               parties)               and               dates               a               teacher,               Rachel               Carr               (Laura               Breckenridge).

Despite               this,               he               continues               to               remember               his               roots               and               works               hard               to               reach               his               personal               goals.

Compared               to               his               classmates               who               have               connections               to               Ivy               League               universities,               Dan               gained               acceptance               to               colleges               such               as               Yale               with               his               natural               writing               skills.

Upon               learning               acceptance               to               Yale,               financial               problems               become               an               issue               in               the               family.

In               the               episode               "Remains               of               the               J"               (3/30/09),               Rufus               learns               that               Dan               will               not               receive               financial               aid               at               Yale               and               tries               to               find               another               way               to               cover               the               cost               of               his               education.

Lily               offers               to               help               Rufus               and               he               initially               accepts,               but               at               the               end,               he               eventually               declines               it.

Dan               gladly               searches               for               jobs               to               help               cover               the               college's               costs.

His               efforts               exemplify               their               family's               quality               of               not               accepting               "the               easy               way               out".

They               work               hard               to               attain               their               goals,               which               makes               the               family               stand               out               from               the               rest               of               the               other               ones               in               the               show.
               The               series               directly               geared               to               a               young               audience,               follows               the               lavish               lifestyles               of               particular               characters               on               the               show.

Following               the               way               of               life               makes               the               show               such               a               huge               guilty               pleasure               because               the               viewers               get               a               glimpse               into               a               privileged               world               opened               only               to               a               few.

This               life               interests               many               people.

In               season               one,               the               viewers               recognize               the               van               der               Woodsen,               Wardolf,               Bass,               and               Archibald               families               belonging               to               the               prominent               social               class               of               the               Upper               East               Side.

The               characters               flaunt               the               sidewalks               in               designer               clothing,               attend               exclusive               parties,               host               elegant               brunches,               and               spend               money               like               there               is               no               tomorrow.

In               the               season               one               episode               "The               Serena               Also               Rises"               (9/28/08),               the               audience               gets               to               enjoy               a               sight               of               the               latest               fashion               trends               at               New               York               City's               Fashion               Week.

According               to               an               article               on               The               New               York               Times,               young               females               do               enjoy               indulging               into               the               scandalized               lives               of               their               beloved               characters,               but               also               tune               in               to               watch               the               latest               fashion               styles.

It               is               "the               extravagant               wardrobes               of               the               stars               -               a               clash               of               piped               blazers,               tiny               kilts,               dueling               plaids               and               festoons               of               jewelry               -               have               inspired               countless               posts               on               fan               Web               sites,               and               magazine               features               about               the               female               leads."               At               times,               the               viewers               watch               to               check               out               the               latest               fashion               trends.

In               fact,               the               show               has               even               helped               the               retail               industry               with               sales,               even               during               the               current               economic               crisis.

In               addition               to               the               viewers,               actual               characters               from               the               show               admire               their               wealthy               counterparts.

The               glamour               in               their               lives               is               what               interests               people.
               In               the               show's               premier               episode,               "Pilot"               (9/19/07),               the               viewers               gets               an               immediate               glimpse               of               the               Upper               East               Side               wealthy               residents               and               their               lives.

Opposite               from               the               working               class               Humphreys,               Serena,               Blair,               Chuck,               and               Nate               is               used               to               having               everything               provided               for               them.

Despite               this,               secrets               lie               within               their               families,               which               illustrates               that               everything               is               life,               is               too               good               to               be               true.

In               season               one,               Serena               (Blake               Lively)               and               her               brother               Eric               (Connor               Paolo)               struggle               to               find               a               role               model               in               their               lives.

Their               mother,               Lily,               focuses               on               maintaining               her               image               in               the               Upper               East               Side               that               she               neglects               her               role               as               the               mother               figure               of               the               family.

In               season               one,               the               audience               learns               that               Serena               used               to               be               well               known               for               her               partying               habits               and               wild               past.

It               is               also               revealed               that               Eric               is               a               survivor               of               attempted               suicide.

However,               Lily               takes               notice               of               her               children's               needs               and               makes               her               family               a               higher               priority.
               In               season               one,               Serena's               "frenemy"               (friend/enemy),               Blair               is               known               as               her               Queen               Bee               at               school.

She               is               the               daughter               of               fashion               designer               Eleanor               (Margaret               Colin)               and               Harold               (John               Shea).

In               the               first               season,               the               audience               learns               that               her               father               left               the               family               for               Roman,               a               male               model,               and               both               moved               to               Paris.

Although               Blair               shares               a               close               relationship               with               her               father,               she               has               a               rocky               relationship               with               her               mother,               who               barely               pays               attention               to               her               needs.

Her               loyal               housekeeper,               Dorota               (Zuzanna               Szadkowski)               becomes               Blair's               confidante               and               mother               figure.

Blair               is               used               to               having               everything               outside               home:               a               great               boyfriend               in               Nate,               a               loyal               group               of               friends,               and               wealth.

In               season               two's               episode,               "The               Age               of               Dissonance"               (3/16/09),               she               learns               that               her               dream               college,               Yale,               rejects               her.

When               everything               falls               out               of               place,               she               breaks               apart.

Despite               facing               some               hardships               in               the               past,               she               remains               optimistic               and               attempts               to               find               the               bright               side               in               life.
               Meanwhile,               Blair's               longtime               on-and-off               boyfriend,               Nate               seems               to               have               it               all.

Often               referred               to               as               the               "golden               boy,"               he               is               the               son               of               Howard               (Sam               Nobards),               a               successful               businessman               and               Anne               (Francie               Swift),               a               member               of               the               infamous               Vanderbilt               family.

Nate               is               considered               as               one               of               the               best-looking               guys               in               the               Upper               East               Side.

Behind               this               façade,               however               he               faces               certain               troubles               within               his               family.

In               season               one,               his               father               faced               drug               problem               and               in               addition,               was               later               arrested               for               fraud               and               other               drug-related               charges.

This               causes               a               rift               in               the               family,               especially               with               his               maternal               family,               the               Vanderbilts,               who               for               a               while               disown               the               family.

In               the               episode,               "A               Thin               Line               Between               Chuck               and               Nate"               (1/9/08),               an               unlikely               betrayal               hits               his               life               when               he               finds               out               that               his               longtime               girlfriend,               Blair               and               best               friend,               Chuck               slept               together               at               the               back               seat               of               a               limousine.

Throughout               the               second               season,               he               tries               to               deal               with               the               fallout               of               his               family               name               and               luckily,               he               is               accepted               to               Columbia               University.
               Nate's               best               friend,               Chuck               is               the               show's               antihero,               the               bad               boy               we               love               to               hate.

He               is               the               son               of               the               late               Evelyn               Bass               and               to               the               late               Bart               Bass,               a               self-made               billionaire               who               owns               the               hotel               where               the               family               lives.

He               is               known               for               his               misdeeds               and               only               does               these               things               for               self-gain.

Despite               being               born               into               a               wealthy               family,               he               reveals               that               his               mother               passed               away               while               giving               birth               to               him               and               since               then,               it               has               caused               a               strain               in               the               relationship               between               him               and               his               father.

In               season               two,               his               father               dies,               leaving               him               to               live               with               his               stepmother,               Lily               (nee               van               der               Woodsen)               and               her               family.

He               starts               to               show               his               softer,               humanizing               side               later               in               the               season.
               Even               though               these               four               families               have               all               the               money               and               power               in               the               world,               they               "only               end               up               driving               most               of               [their               children]               to               the               extreme               opposite,               the               moral...would               have               a               little               more               weight               if               they               weren't               surrounded               by               the               dazzling               flash               of               light               bulbs...We're               reminded,               at               every               turn,               that               money               doesn't               solve               anything."They               have               can               everything               in               the               world,               but               what               most               of               them               lack               are               the               morals               and               values               that               the               Humphreys               possess.

This               distinct               quality               illustrates               the               difference               between               the               two               opposing               social               classes.
               The               central               characters'               lives               revolve               around               controversial               issues               such               as               sex.

Criticized               for               its               depiction               of               sex,               society               claims               that               Gossip               Girl               influences               the               behavior               of               young               teenagers               in               America.

According               to               a               report               on               New               York               Daily               News,               "shows               that               highlight               only               the               positive               aspects               of               sexual               behavior               and               not               the               risks               can               lead               teens               to               have               unprotected               sex               before               they're               ready               to               make               responsible               and               informed               decisions."               In               the               first               three               minutes               of               the               premiere               episode,               "Pilot,"               the               audience               is               introduced               with               a               scene               of               Blair               attempting               to               force               Nate               into               sleeping               with               her               during               a               cocktail               party.

The               controversy               continues               when               people               question               Serena's               return               to               New               York               City,               after               disappearing               for               a               year.

Immediately               spotting               her               at               the               train               station,               students               text               and               report               to               their               fellow               classmate               of               her               return.

The               audience               learns               in               that               same               episode               that               Serena               slept               with               Blair's               boyfriend,               Nate               on               the               bar               the               Campbell               Apartment.

This               one-night               tryst               places               a               strain               on               Serena               and               Blair's               friendship               during               the               first               half               of               the               season.

In               addition,               it               rips               Blair               and               Nate               apart,               leading               her               to               sleep               with               his               best               friend,               Chuck.
               Not               only               the               females               of               Upper               East               Side               who               performs               sexual               misdeeds,               but               also               the               men,               all               who               consummate               relations               with               different               women,               even               the               older               ones.

In               the               season               two               opener,               "Summer               Kind               of               Wonderful"               (9/1/08),               Nate               gets               involved               in               a               steamy               relationship               with               an               older               woman,               named               Catherine               (Madchen               Amick)               whom               is               married.

It               abruptly               ends               after               the               he               finds               out               that               she               was               having               an               affair               with               her               stepson,               Marcus               (Blair's               summer               fling).

In               addition,               good               guy               Dan               develops               a               love               affair               and               sleeps               with               high               school               teacher,               Rachel.

These               relationships               that               Nate               and               Dan               have               with               the               women               are               what               one               may               call,               a               cougar               relationship-               the               romantic               connection               between               an               older               woman               and               a               younger               man.

Although               this               can               happen,               it               does               not               occur               often               in               real               life.

It               is               only               in               the               crazy               world               of               Gossip               Girl               where               individuals               have               secret               affairs,               cheat,               or               date               older               people               on               a               normal               basis.

In               this               aspect,               the               show               seems               to               take               odd               and               sometimes               ridiculous               twists               and               turns               to               embellish               the               drama               between               characters.

Nevertheless,               this               phenomenon               attracts               viewers               because               it               is               so               intriguing               and               scandalous.

The               dramatic               events               allow               the               viewers               to               live               vicariously               through               the               rich,               glamorous               inhabitants               of               the               Upper               East               Side.

The               audience               enjoys               indulging               in               shows               that               feature               juicy,               scandalous               plots               such               as               ones               featured               on               this               show.
               The               series               touches               upon               the               controversial               topic               of               homosexuality.

Early               in               season               one,               Eric               was               known               as               the               former               rehab               patient,               but               also               the               sweet               and               caring               brother               of               Serena.

In               the               episode               "All               About               My               Brother"               (5/5/08),               Eric               reveals               to               his               family               that               is               homosexual.

Dan               witnesses               Eric's               new               secret               relationship               with               a               fellow               student,               Asher               (Jesse               Swenson).

However,               Asher               denies               this               relationship,               causing               an               embarrassment               to               Eric               and               his               family.

Luckily,               he               finds               a               steady               relationship               in               another               fellow               classmate,               Jonathan               (Matt               Doyle).

Eric's               homosexuality               is               ironic               because               in               the               original               book               series,               it               is               the               two               main               characters               Dan               and               Chuck,               who               deal               with               being               a               homosexual.

However,               in               the               series,               the               producers               decided               to               alter               Dan's               and               Chuck's               sexual               preferences               because               the               show               reaches               out               to               a               different               audience.

In               mainstream               American               society,               homosexuality               remains               a               touchy               subject               and               is               even,               not               accepted               by               all.

Therefore,               they               altered               the               show               quite               a               bit               to               increase               a               larger               fan               base.

The               audience               admires               these               good-looking               guys;               they               are               one               of               the               reasons               why               young               female               viewers               tune               in               weekly.

Thus,               if               the               producers               decided               to               mimic               the               book               series,               the               show               would               not               be               as               very               popular.

There               would               not               be               as               much               "eye               candy"               for               girls               to               indulge               in               when               they               watch.
               Gossip               Girl               is               a               series               about               privileged               individuals,               something               we               want               or               hope               to               be               a               part               of.

The               audience               watches               the               show               because               they               are               curious               about               this               lifestyle.

Gossip               Girl               is               highly               known               for               its               depiction               of               different               social               classes               and               sexual               exploration.

These               two               interesting               topics               are               reasons               why               the               show               lures               in               viewers               weekly.

The               attractive               cast,               addicting               plot               lines,               and               the               Gossip               Girl's               catchy               phrases               make               the               series               a               guilty               pleasure;               it               is               a               pleasurable               show               to               watch,               despite               some               of               its               risqué               language               and               images.

As               Gossip               Girl               says               at               the               conclusion               of               every               episode,               "You               know               you               love               me.

Xoxo,               Gossip               Girl."               She               is               by               all               means,               correct               in               every               way:               the               audience               cannot               get               enough               of               the               show               because               we               love               it               so               much.
